The Clifton Inn
Past Project
Located in Charlottesville, Virginia, The Clifton is one of the premier luxury inns in the United States. Featuring 20 beautifully appointed guest rooms, The Clifton maintains a wine cellar with over 100 different wines, the Copper Bar and 1799, the award winning restaurant headed by Michelin starred Chef Matthew Bousquet.
Project Overview:
The Clifton was voted the #1 Inn or Bed & Breakfast by C-Ville Weekly in 2019. Built in 1799 as a colonial-style home for Thomas Jefferson’s daughter, Martha, and her husband, Thomas Mann Randolph, it is the closest accommodation to Monticello. The 100-acre property includes a restaurant, bar and lounge, wine cellar, infinity pool, croquet lawn, private lake, and walking trails. The Clifton’s restaurant, 1799, is directed by Michelin-starred Executive Chef Matthew Bousquet. In 2019, it also received the Wine Spectator Award of Excellence. The property’s interiors were reimagined in the spring of 2018 by the acclaimed Blackberry Design Group. A popular wedding venue, The Clifton can host events for up to 250 guests.
“The Retro Hospitality management team have worked tirelessly to support our hotel. They are a fully engaged partner maintaining a constant presence on property, they consistently communicate with ownership and Retro is truly results driven. In the first six months of managing The Clifton, we have never seen hotel occupancy so high and we are beginning to unlock this hotel’s value like we envisioned when we purchased it in 2017.”
